FOTBOT STATEMENT ON THE CHAGOS ISLANDS UN COURT RULING
Friends of the British Overseas Territories notes the UN’s Highest Court ruling that the UK should end its control of the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean "as rapidly as possible".
We believe the report has reached the wrong conclusion. FOTBOT is putting forward the case that if it is found feasible for repatriation to take place the Chagos Islanders should be repatriated under UK administration. We urge the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to look again at the feasibility options for repatriation as soon as possible. If the UN Court took the time to speak to the Chagos Island community, they would note that the islanders that are residing in Mauritius are often poorly treated.
We hope the UK government will pay little attention to this judgement and instead focus on engaging with the Chagos Islands community groups in Mauritius and the UK to explore repatriation options.
